A blurry photo has always been frowned upon, and photographers are constantly trying to take photos that are exposed properly and are not blurry. But blur is not always a bad thing. An effective way to use blurring to the advantage of the photographer is to use the panning technique to show movement along a straight line.

To effectively pan a photo, your camera must be set at a relatively slow shutter speed in order to ensure blur is created. Then, choose a subject a that is moving in a straight, predictable, motion. Follow the subject smoothly with your camera and when you are moving at the same rate as the subject, press the shutter release button, and continue moving. You will be surprised with your results.

The panning technique can be used in a verity of different venues that have any kind of movement. From cars on the street to squirrels in a park, panning will effectively convey the motion of the subject.
